Some bored fool
found a hole punch and decided to test it on public property
. I don’t think the winds we’ve had lately merit it, and the holes likely do nothing or
probably increase the drag anyway.

These holes have nothing to do with winds while the sign is performing its stationary duties, informing drivers on appropriate rules of the road.
These holes are for those night drives with their other sign friends in the wee hours of the morning. Without them the signs risk accidental and premature ejection from the vehicle. Everyone knows they love to rock the NA Miata with the top down.

Betting alcohol is involved here. Some of the holes are in neat r ows and then they wander around . Wonder if they whistle in the wind.
Riding NC country road s on my bicycle as a youth, early 70s , Guys with pickups would sometimes shoot road signs in front of me for fun. The boom and then rattle of shot of the metal. Never got any on me but it raised my heartrate. Or bounce beer cans off my back. And I was considered the weirdo ...

T his could actually be a valid reason the DOT might put holes in them, not sure who would want to steal a sign with a bunch of holes in it?
